ARIPO INFORMATION

The African Regional Intellectual Property Organisation (ARIPO) was established in 1973 under the Lusaka Agreement. The main reason for its establishment was to consolidate resources of its member states in order to avoid duplication of financial and human resources. Article III of the Lusaka Convention clearly stipulates the objectives of ARIPO to include among others, to promote the harmonization and development of industrial property laws and matters related thereto appropriate to the needs of its members or of the region as a whole, promote the exchange of ideas and experience, research and studies related to industrial property and to establish such common services or organs as may be necessary or desirable for coordination , harmonization and development of industrial property activities relating to its members.

Applications for grant of patents or registration of utility models and industrial designs may be filed either directly with the ARIPO office or the industrial property office at the contracting state.This is subject to payment of the prescribed fees.

The Kenya Industrial property Institute acts as a receiving office where a regional application is filed with it by a resident or national of Kenya. According to the protocol, this application should be triplicate, in English and accompanied by a transmittal fee.
